What is DIVX file?

The DIVX extension identifies video files that use the DivX Media Format (DMF) as a container and contain DivX encoded video.

More info

DivX refers to a highly efficient video compression method that supports MPEG 4 fut and resolutions up to 1920x1080 (FulHD). This process was developed by DivX LLC, which now belongs to Sonic Solutions. It is proprietrous and lossy.

Even though the video stream in DIVX files is encoded using this method, the DMF includes more than this.

Video data encoded with DivX may also be present in other container formats, such as avi or mkv. These container formats support in contrast to DMF but also other compression methods.

The container format DMF, which is identified by the extension DIVX, supports DVD-like functions. For example, a DIVX file may contain menus and navigation, and in addition to multiple audio and video streams, subtitles, chapters, and metadata are also supported.

Many hardware players, such as DVD players, can play DivX encoded material. They do not necessarily support files with the extension DIVX or their special properties. DivX LLC certifies devices with different seals. On the basis of these seals one can recognize which functions are supported. These devices include media center, TV, DVD player, BluRay player and portable devices.

Divx also supports streaming and is therefore increasingly found on the Internet.

While many software players can play DIVX files, many do not support all features.
