Have you encountered a problem with a BKF file? Don’t you know which program opens a file with this extension? You will find all the information you need about working with a BKF file here. In the further part of this page we have added a list of programs that should open your BKF file. It is enough you choose a proper application for your operating system, download and install it.

The file extension BKF marks backup files of the Windows backup function. BKF files are only generated under Windows NT systems (Windows NT, 2000, XP).

BKF files can contain data from an entire hard disk backup, individual partitions or individual folders. In order to access the backup function, you can right-click on any partition icon in the workstation and then choose 'Tools' -> 'Save Now'. It is also possible to get there via the Control Panel-> Performance and Maintenance-> Backup Data. If you already have a BKF file, double click.

Depending on what is in a BKF file, you should exercise caution when writing back. You should not just write back foreign BKF files, as you may be able to restore an entire partition and possibly overwrite your own partitions. In case of an unknown big BKF file you should always write back to an empty partition.

Since it is no longer possible to restore BKF files under Windows Vista or Windows 7 using the operating system function, one has to resort to commercial programs such as 'Read BKF', which also make this possible under the systems mentioned. Furthermore, there are several programs to repair BKF files.

How to open a BKF file? Advice and guidance

Absolutely most often appearing reason that prevents you from opening the BKF file is the lack of a proper application to support it in your operating system. It is notably the first thing you need to address. When one of the programs to support a BKF file from the list is already installed, you can try to rerun the file. The system should display a message asking you to choose a primary application to support BKF files. At this point we are looking for disk space where the application was installed in and we can link it with a BKF file. Since then, our operating system will use the selected program to support all BKF files.

Other issues

Despite the described problem with BKF there may be many more problems. If the existing operations were not effective, get involved with the following matters:

- verify that the BKF file is not damaged and that it has been downloaded or copied in whole
- verify that the file has a file extension that has not been intentionally changed (for example, if it do not contain other information than its extension suggests)
- make sure again whether the BKF file type is linked in the operating system with a proper program
- make sure that the file is not infected with a virus and you have up to date software and drivers.
