With the EPUB file extension digital books are marked in the Open Ebook format. It is an open, XML-based standard for digital and electronic publications. This is developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).

The EPUB format replaces the older standard Open eBook (EOB) and can contain not only the book data but also DRM (Digital Rights Management) mechanisms.

The EPUB format is based on three open standards, all developed and maintained by the IDPF.

Open Publication Structure (OPS), which defines the formatting of the actual content
Open Packaging Format (OPF), which defines the structure (including table of contents)
Open Container Format (OCF), which regulates the packaging of all necessary files to a ZIP archive with EPUB extension
epub files can be viewed with many readers and some readers, for example OYO, Apple iPad or Sony Reader. In addition, there are a variety of conversion programs to convert EPUB into other formats.

How to open a EPUB file? Advice and guidance

Absolutely most often appearing reason that prevents you from opening the EPUB file is the lack of a proper application to support it in your operating system. It is notably the first thing you need to address. When one of the programs to support a EPUB file from the list is already installed, you can try to rerun the file. The system should display a message asking you to choose a primary application to support EPUB files. At this point we are looking for disk space where the application was installed in and we can link it with a EPUB file. Since then, our operating system will use the selected program to support all EPUB files.

Other issues

Despite the described problem with EPUB there may be many more problems. If the existing operations were not effective, get involved with the following matters:

- verify that the EPUB file is not damaged and that it has been downloaded or copied in whole
- verify that the file has a file extension that has not been intentionally changed (for example, if it do not contain other information than its extension suggests)
- make sure again whether the EPUB file type is linked in the operating system with a proper program
- make sure that the file is not infected with a virus and you have up to date software and drivers.
