What is ETD file?

ETD files are so-called EBX (Electronic Book Exchange) Transfer Data files, which contain the information that makes it possible to download a most-bought e-book with Adobe Digital Editions. The usually named ebx.Etd file can be easily started by double clicking on installed Adobe Digital Editions.

Please note that Adobe Digital Editions can only load ETD files up to version 1.7, as of 1.7.1 only the acsm files that have the same purpose but a different format will be supported. Even the newer versions of Acrobat Reader can not handle these files.

How to open file with ETD extension?

In order to open a file with ETD extension one of the following programs must be installed on user’s system. If a problem with opening ETD file occurred, it is highly possible that none of the listed programs is present on user’s system. Even if one or more said programs are installed, there may be issues related with given programs. In order to solve a problem with ETD files, follow the instructions below.

Install Adobe Reader or other program from the list

Most often resolving problems with opening ETD files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support ETD files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of ETD files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.


Set Adobe Reader as the default program for opening ETD files

It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate ETD files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Reader applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Reader has been installed.

Sometimes problems with opening ETD files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:

  • File data is corrupted
  • ETD files has been not been completely download from the internet (only a part of the data has been downloaded)
  • Currently used user account hasn’t been granted necessary privileges to open ETD files (should that be the case, please contact your system administrator or IT specialist)
