The file extension 8BEM marks plugins for the Mac version of the image processing software Adobe Photoshop. With these plugins, additional functionalities, such as new effects or the support of other graphic formats in Photoshop, can be reprinted. Adobe Photoshop uses various 8b endings for different plugin types. 8BEM files are export plugins.
8BEM files come in the plugin folder (plugins) located inside the main Photoshop folder. It should be noted that not all plugins are compatible with all versions of Photoshop, and when using the PowerPC version, a customized version of the plugin is also required.
In addition, one must select the plugins for its platform, since those for Mac OSX Photoshop do not work with the Windows version of Photoshop. However, the plugins for the Windows version always have the official extension 8be.
The file extension 8BEM refers to export plugins for file formats or directly to other programs. For example, there are plugins for the gif export (with web-safe colors), which is already included in the newer Photoshop versions, but also for the direct export of images to Photosynth Web Service from Microsoft.
To see if a plugin is installed correctly, you can get a list of all installed plugins in the submenu Plugins (Windows: Help, Mac OSX: Photoshop). In addition to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements also has a plug-in interface for 8BEM files.
Most often resolving problems with opening 8BEM files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support 8BEM files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of 8BEM files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate 8BEM files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Photoshop applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Photoshop has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening 8BEM files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
